Volvo’s Luxury Electric Duo Heads to Vietnam: EX90 and ES90 Incoming

Volvo Vietnam is generating buzz with teaser images of its flagship all-electric models, the EX90 SUV and ES90 sedan-crossover, shared on their official Facebook page. These premium EVs are slated for launch in the country later this year, marking a significant push into the luxury electric vehicle market.

Dealerships across Vietnam have already begun accepting reservations since early July, even as full specs and pricing for the local market remain under wraps. Both vehicles will likely arrive as fully imported units from Volvo’s Malaysian production facility.

The EX90: A Spacious Electric SUV Powerhouse

Building on the success of the XC90, the EX90 offers a fully electric alternative with seating for up to seven passengers. Its sleek design features a closed grille for better aerodynamics, distinctive Thor’s Hammer-shaped LED headlights, flush door handles, and a streamlined body that enhances range and efficiency.

In markets like Malaysia, the top-spec Ultra variant packs dual electric motors delivering 517 horsepower and a massive 910 Nm of torque. Powered by a 111 kWh battery, it boasts an impressive WLTP-rated range of up to 623 km on a single charge. This makes it ideal for long family trips across Vietnam’s diverse terrains, from urban Hanoi streets to coastal highways.

The ES90: Innovative Electric Fastback Crossover

The ES90 reimagines the S90 as a versatile electric vehicle that’s more than a traditional sedan. Volvo positions it as a unique fastback crossover with elevated ground clearance, blending sedan elegance with SUV practicality. It shares the EX90’s bold styling cues, including signature daytime running lights, C-shaped taillights, a full-width rear light bar, hidden door handles, and a seamless front fascia.

Available in rear-wheel-drive configuration in some regions (with all-wheel-drive options elsewhere), the single-motor ES90 produces 333 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque from its 92 kWh battery. It achieves a WLTP range of 651 km, outpacing many rivals. A standout feature is its 800V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast DC charging at up to 350 kW—adding 300 km of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions, or 10-80% in about 20 minutes. For Vietnamese buyers, this means minimal downtime during busy travel seasons.

Luxurious Interiors and Advanced Tech

Both models share a high-end cabin experience, highlighted by a towering 14.5-inch portrait-style central touchscreen, customizable ambient lighting, and the renowned Bowers & Wilkins sound system. These EVs prioritize safety with Volvo’s latest driver-assistance suite, including LiDAR for superior autonomous driving capabilities.

Practical tip: When reserving, inquire about Vietnam-specific adaptations like right-hand drive compatibility or local charging infrastructure support to ensure seamless integration into daily life.

Facing Tough Competition in Vietnam’s EV Scene

Upon arrival, the ES90 will challenge the upcoming all-electric Lexus ES500h hybrid alternative and established players like the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV (starting around 3.999 billion VND) or the five-seat Audi Q8 e-tron (from 3.8 billion VND). The EX90 targets premium SUV buyers seeking space and power without emissions.

Volvo stands out as the only luxury brand in Vietnam exclusively offering hybrids and pure EVs—no gas-only models in sight. Following the EC40 Recharge, these newcomers strengthen Volvo’s green lineup.

Broader EV Luxury Boom Ahead

Vietnam’s luxury EV segment is heating up, with more arrivals by year-end including the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric, Porsche Cayenne Electric, and Zeekr models. This influx signals growing infrastructure, incentives, and consumer demand for sustainable luxury motoring.

For potential buyers, consider test drives once available, evaluate total ownership costs (including home charger installation), and compare warranties. Volvo’s EVs promise not just performance but a commitment to safety and sustainability, perfect for Vietnam’s forward-thinking drivers.
