Leapmotor’s Game-Changing Plan: Bidding Farewell to the 12V Battery in Electric Cars by 2027

Leapmotor’s Revolutionary Approach to Ending 12V Battery Failures in Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) have come a long way, but one persistent issue continues to sideline many owners: the humble 12V battery. Surprisingly, this low-voltage component causes more breakdowns than the high-voltage traction batteries everyone worries about. Chinese automaker Leapmotor, partnering with Stellantis for European markets, is tackling this head-on with a groundbreaking technology set to launch in 2027. By integrating low-voltage functions directly into the main battery pack, Leapmotor aims to eliminate the 12V battery entirely, promising greater reliability, lower costs, and environmental gains.

The Hidden Weak Link in EVs: Why 12V Batteries Fail So Often

Despite their advanced nature, EVs still rely on a traditional 12V battery, a staple in cars since the 1950s. This battery powers essential accessories like windshield wipers, heating and air conditioning, lights, infotainment screens, safety features, and even airbag systems. Crucially, it also activates the high-voltage contactors needed to start the vehicle.

Data from roadside assistance services, such as Germany’s ADAC, reveals that a dead 12V battery is the top reason EVs get towed. Extreme temperatures, frequent short trips, and the constant draw from electronics drain it faster than in gas cars. Owners can prevent issues by:

  • Using a trickle charger for parked EVs.
  • Ensuring the battery is tested during routine maintenance.
  • Disconnecting it if storing the vehicle long-term.

How Leapmotor Plans to Ditch the 12V Battery Forever

At its Tech Day event previewing 2026 innovations, Leapmotor unveiled a unified battery architecture. This ‘cell-to-chassis 3.0’ system uses the same cells and modules for both high and low voltage needs, sharing thermal management and power distribution. No more separate lead-acid battery means a complete overhaul of the vehicle’s electrical setup.

Scheduled for new models in 2027 alongside a space-optimized chassis design, this tech simplifies manufacturing and reduces parts count. Early concepts suggest it looks like a standard high-voltage pack but packs smarter internals.

Big Wins for Owners and the Planet

Eliminating the 12V battery could slash maintenance expenses, as replacements are a common and costly fix. Environmentally, it’s a boon—millions of lead-acid batteries end up in landfills yearly, leaching toxins. Leapmotor’s solution minimizes waste and boosts recyclability, aligning with sustainable EV goals.

For buyers, expect fewer unexpected callouts and potentially lower ownership costs. Paired with Leapmotor’s affordable EVs like the T03, this could make electric driving even more appealing.

Does This Solve Reliability Concerns for Good?

On paper, it’s a game-changer. However, real-world proof will take time. New tech must endure years of varied driving conditions, from freezing winters to scorching summers. Past innovations, like certain engine belt designs, looked perfect initially but faltered later.

Leapmotor’s move is exciting, but track long-term owner feedback. If successful, it could set a new standard, influencing rivals like Tesla or BYD. Stay tuned for 2027 launches to see if this eliminates a major EV pain point.
